Clethra ‘Ruby Spice’
Clethra alnifolia ‘Ruby Spice’
LANDSCAPE USE
Now this is a showy shrub! Glossy grass-green leaves with deep veining are nice enough, but the real show starts in July, when the plant pushes out spikes of fluffy pink flowers with yellow capped stamens. These are highly scented and should be planted close to the house for regular enjoyment! A lot of shrubs with nice blooms are too large for small yards, but this one stays manageable. Although they are great for specimen plants, it’s worth considering these for an informal hedge that attracts tons of pollinators and hummingbirds.
PRUNING
Simply remove any diseased or rubbing branches during winter, if size control is necessary, prune the plant just after it blooms to ensure the next seasons buds are not removed.
