Coral Bark Japanese Maple or Coral Tower – Sango Kaku
Acer palmatum
LANDSCAPE USE
Excellent for use as a specimen whether in a large planter or in the ground. Has an upright, vase like shape. Broad leaves in shades of vibrant green grace the tree in summer, but in fall the real show begins with the leaves turning chartreuse against a backdrop of scarlet stems.
PRUNING
Remove any branches that rub against each other or grow towards the center of the plant in mid-winter. This tree also benefits from a deep pruning every few years as the new stems produced afterwards are much more brilliant than those that have seen a few years of growth.
RECOMMENDED PRODUCTS
Copper based fungicide can be used to control sooty mold.
KING’S TIPS
Unlike most Japanese maples, extra trunks arising from the base should be celebrated rather than mourned, they give opportunities for more of the lovely red stems!
