Winter Gem Boxwood
Buxus macrophylla var. japonica ‘Winter Gem’
LANDSCAPE USE
‘Winter Gem’ boxwoods love the center of the road, they’re perfectly in the middle of cultivars when it comes to maximum size, establishing beautiful hedges. The tone of the leaves is grassy in color, very vibrant but not quite apple green. These work well to add contrast to the flanks of a dark leafed hedge. As a bonus, it has a nice, bronzed winter color.
PRUNING
To maintain an informal hedge shear off new growth twice during the growing season, with a slightly deeper prune in winter. For a more formal look, the growth should be trimmed very sparingly every month of the growing season. Take care not to cut into deep wood on the sides and bottom of the plant, shading from the top of the canopy means these areas may struggle to re-bud in a timely fashion, leaving unsightly gaps. This is especially true of round forms.
