American Boxwood
Buxus Sempervirens
LANDSCAPE USE
You’ll find these tough shrubs anywhere you find civilization. It has the typical boxwood density and the adaptability they are known for. If left unclipped, it’ll slowly make a rounded shrub: but can be pruned into any shape. These are the plants you want for hedging, difficult slopes, to add structure to the landscape, and for privacy screening.
These are the cultivar you need for maximum size, they top out at a double the size of any other variety we carry. They work especially well for windbreaks and shelterbelts. The new growth on these is a pretty blue toned green and they have pale undersides, giving dimensionality of color, particularly when the wind is blowing.
PRUNING
The world is your oyster with these. All Buxus cultivars are a top choice for topiary and hedging. To maintain an informal hedge shear off new growth twice during the growing season, with a slightly deeper prune in winter. For a more formal look, the growth should be trimmed very sparingly every month of the growing season. Take care not to cut into deep wood on the sides and bottom of the plant, shading from the top of the canopy means these areas may struggle to re-bud in a timely fashion, leaving unsightly gaps. This is especially true of round forms.
